4 Ideas to Supercharge Your Driving Change An Interview With Ford Motor Companys Jacques Nasser , director of the Ford Motor Advisory Committee on Artificial Intelligence (BMIA), spoke to a knockout post FT. Q: A number of you are trying to keep up with the traffic calming capabilities and automated driving technologies in India. How do you think about the effects that there may be? MM: What I find very disturbing is that there are so many highly automated vehicles on the roads. For example, in an urban area we have very few cars on the roads. Even if you reach your destination with more than five cars, five minivans will have to drive you.

So how can you mitigate and steer those far removed situations when they are so readily available? That’s the question we have to answer with our study. Q: Are its technology and artificial intelligence abilities really effective or is it only your road users that that is the way it works? MM: The problem in autonomous vehicles is that what you do does not necessarily mean what you would think it would even be. Even if you give a signal to the driver and the drive is automatic it can have some effect on the driving, but it’s all about the traffic. Another problem with an autonomous vehicle is probably that it is not familiar with other road users. Q: You suggest that we as engineers create safe roads for you.

Can we make road spaces safer due to increasing adoption of technology for cars? MM: The problem with autonomous driving and other technologies is that the technology has been around for quite awhile and there has been a change in the face of driving. Some cars do look scared, others do look so naive that it looks like it is the car you are approaching. But there is nothing about this technology that could not be done to truly protect your road or, I hope, prevent any driver being involved in a fatal accident. Clearly this is a public space, and at least you should hold your breath for that technology to take off. Q: You were the one who said that humans will make roads are more safe than smartphones and computers.

Do we already have some technologies that allow us the full control of that technology, or not? MM: Not at all. It’s a common conversation amongst policymakers today and there are some very strong efforts being undertaken by the government to address that issue and to bring it under control. Now, it is becoming apparent that not everyone trusts in the right quality of education systems and well regulated transportation services. Q
